You might have seen the Hawaii News Now story about graffiti in Waikele (if not, you can read the story on Hawaii News Now).
For the past 15 years, the Waikele Community Association has paid to powerwash a wall that is getting tagged. This wall faces Kamehameha Highway. The association is now requiring homeowners to buy paint and paint over the tags themselves.
The problem with pothole patches from hardware stores is that they are temporary patches. They're not meant to last for more than a few months (thus the relative "cheap" price). If you need temporary relief and plan to fix the pothole within the next few months, then pothole patches from hardware stores are alright.
However, if you're unable to fix the pothole in the next few months, your pothole will return.
Potholes develop because your asphalt pavement has become oxidized; leading to cracks in your pavement which allows water to enter and damage your base course. If not addressed in a timely manner, pothles will get larger and become a safety hazard for motorists and foot traffic.
Most pothole patch materials you find at hardware stores are meant to provide temporary relief, meaning the patch is meant to last a few months, and no more. If you don't address the pothole within that span, the pothole will return. This is because most pothole patch materials allow water to seep back into the base, causing the pothole to become larger.

A typical asphalt pavement might last 12-15 years without maintenance. As soon as asphalt is laid down, it's exposed to conditions that immediately begin to degrade the pavement. Understanding the causes of asphalt damage and identifying when it's taking place will help you prioritize what asphalt repair and maintenance tasks need to be done immediately to help prevent further damage.
Last week Wednesday we held our first Lunch & Learn and more than 20 people joined us to learn about asphalt maintenance and what goes into an asphalt maintenance plan. Today I wanted to share with you our slide deck. We focus on why its important to maintain your asphalt, how your asphalt degrades, and what you should be doing to maintain it.
Your typical sealcoat may take up to 24 hours to cure (dry to the touch and a tack free surface). What this means for you is that you’re keeping your tenants out of their parking stalls or are interrupting customer parking for at least a day. Realizing this issue, we’ve brought in a sealcoat product that cures in about 8-9 hours. What this means for you is that your tenants are only removed from their parking stalls for less than half a day.
We understand that whether you’re running a business or managing a property, taking care of your asphalt will inconvenience tenants. That’s why we use a quick cure sealcoat and perform work in phases.
